Loving God of Aotearoa

I wrote this hymn for Rev Desmond Cooper, who liked the tune but wanted new, less patriotic words. Desmond helped me to shape the words so that they were more inclusive and better focused on praise to God.

I was delighted to have the hymn sung at Methodist Conference 2010 at Desmond and Sue Spindler’s induction as president and vice-president of the Methodist church.

The hymn has themes of gathering and of expressing our faith and spirituality here in Aotearoa New Zealand today.

The mention of Matariki picks up on the idea that for Maori the rising of the seven stars of the Pleiades group at the start of winter marks the beginning of a new year. Rev Stuart Slinn in a service earlier in 2010 made a connection between Matariki and that being forgiven, and forgiving others, also let’s us make a symbolic fresh start.

Rimu is a native species of forest giant tree. Tui is a large bird with glossy black feathers, a white ruffle round it's neck and a beautiful melodious song.

Kindle A Flame

A simple song for congregations to sing during intercessory prayers.

You will need one or two confident singers to lead. It works well with a simple guitar accompaniment, e.g. strumming once for each chord or finger picking.

You can sing all the verses together, or alternate singing a verse with a few lines of prayer.

I have often used just the first verse as a sung response between several stanzas of prayers.

A candle could be lit before the first verse as a visual focus.

Covenant Hymn

The Methodist church has a covenant service at the start of the year in which the congregation and minister/s re-commit to serving God and the community in the coming year. In New Zealand, this service is often held on the first Sunday in February, after members have returned from the summer holiday.

Note that the refrain is sung before each verse. The setting of each verse is slightly different to fit the words.

Another possibility is to use just the refrain as a sung congregational response to intercessions.

Christmas Halleluia

This is a simple round which we have sung in 2 parts. An adventurous group could try it in four parts.

Christ is always near to me

The words were written by Philip's maternal grandfather Rev Robert Ebenezer Fordyce (1897-1981) who was a Methodist minister. Rev Fordyce titled the poem "Christ’s abiding presence" and based it on Matthew 28:20.

Philip has set these words to the well known tune Hyfrydol.
